FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DOES THERAPY WORK?

I offer a particular form of psychotherapy known as person-centred counselling.

This means focusing on the client’s exploration of their own experiences, thoughts and feelings. It is a humanistic modality that views the therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client as the primary working tool. This is to help you feel validated and safe and to encourage you to develop your own understanding and sense of self. It is a non-directive form of therapy that regards you as the authority on your own story and trusts that with appropriate support, you possess the potential for self-development.

Person-centred counsellors provide a space for you to talk openly and be heard with empathy. Your counsellor’s job is to support you in becoming clearer about your needs and finding ways to manage life’s challenges as constructively as you feel able.

WILL THERAPY HELP?

This is a common question asked about therapy. In general, the very fact that a person has sought out therapy is an indicator of their motivation to work towards change. This, together with support from a therapist they feel comfortable with, is likely to lead to subtle or substantial development in their lives. For some people, a few sessions may suffice while others choose to continue to use regular therapy over extended periods.

Many clients find sessions greatly rewarding and they may describe insights and breakthroughs they experience thanks to therapy.

However, it is important to note that it requires great courage and energy to talk about experiences that can be deeply painful and which you may never have felt safe approaching with anyone before. It is therefore essential that you take the time you need to build up trust with your therapist as you work your way towards a greater sense of ease and confidence.

HOW MANY SESSIONS AND HOW FREQUENT?

Therapy usually begins with weekly sessions. However, you and your therapist may decide that more or less frequent sessions would suit you better. In general, it is recommended that you begin with a 6-week block followed by a review to discuss how you feel about progress and desire to continue.

The client is always free to discontinue therapy at any time. It is usually helpful to close with a session in which you discuss your experience of therapy with your counsellor.

CAN ANYONE GO TO THERAPY?

Absolutely. Anyone is welcome to talk to a counsellor about more troubling problems, such as experiences of trauma, depression or anxiety but also simply to explore ways of improving their motivation, relationships or self-esteem.

IS IT CONFIDENTIAL?

All personal details about a client or notes taken during sessions are treated with strict confidentiality. None of this information is shared with any third party. All such information is stored securely in compliance with GDPR regulations.

The few exceptions to this are if a client discloses a serious crime, or that a child or vulnerable adult is at significant risk. This is part of the therapeutic contract and any situations that would necessitate a breach of confidentiality would, whenever possible, be discussed with the client.

WHAT IS THE CANCELLATION POLICY?

Sessions can be cancelled with a full refund up to 24 hours before a session. Late cancellations or missed appointments will be charged at the full fee.

If for any reason I have to cancel an appointment, you will be informed as soon as possible and will not be charged. I will endeavour to reschedule your booking as soon as possible and refund any payments already made.

WHEN DOES THERAPY END?

Therapy is a collaborative experience between a counsellor and their client. I will review the process with you regularly so that we can discuss your expectations and progress. The number of sessions a client wants varies, depending on factors such as what brought them to counselling in the first place. They are always free to change the frequency of sessions, take a break or discontinue.

DO YOU SEE CLIENTS WORLDWIDE?

I offer counselling in both English and Swedish, primarily to residents of the UK and EU but also further afield. If you are a resident in another country, my ability to provide counselling for you will depend on the rules and regulations applicable for that particular country. Please get in touch with your enquiry if you live outside the UK/EU or require prices in other currencies.
